CED and CISTEM conduct TAP training in Science and Mathematics

Oct 19 2025

The College of Education (CED), through the Department of Science and Mathematics Education (DSME) with the support of the Center for Integrated STEM Education, Inc. (CISTEM) conducted a two-day training titled Teacher Advancement Program (TAP) for Science and Mathematics on October 10–11, 2025 at the MSU-IIT Integrated Developmental School (IDS) Campus, Hinaplanon, Iligan City. The training aimed to strengthen teachers’ pedagogical competence and content mastery in Grade 7 Science and Mathematics.

Science and Mathematics teachers from the Department of Education (DepEd) Iligan City Division, with select faculty members from DSME and IDS, participated in the two-day training.

Day 1 opened with messages from the CED, DepEd-Iligan City Division, and CISTEM, setting the tone for collaboration and professional growth. Pre-tests were administered to assess participants’ baseline knowledge prior to the sessions.

Facilitated by Ms. Loise Angelica Oruga and Dr. Maria Helen Catalan from UP NISMED, the Science Group focused on Science of Materials and Life Science topics. Their sessions emphasized inquiry-based learning and interactive classroom applications designed to engage students in scientific exploration. Simultaneously, the Mathematics Group tackled Number and Algebra 1 and Measurement and Geometry, led by Dr. Ma. Nympha Joaquin from the UP College of Education, focusing on conceptual understanding, reasoning, and mathematical modeling.

On the second day, the sessions advanced into more complex content areas while integrating research-based teaching strategies. The Science Group engaged in discussions on Force, Motion, and Energy and Earth and Space Science with Deputy Director Cerilina Maramag and Mr. Eligio Obille Jr. of UP NISMED. Through dynamic discussions and contextualized activities, participants deepened their understanding of scientific concepts and refined their teaching pedagogies.

Meanwhile, the Mathematics Group delved into Number and Algebra 2 and Data and Probability, facilitated by Ms. Ruth Joy Magno and Asst. Prof. Ramon L. Sanchez III from the UP College of Education. Their areas centered on data analysis, real-world problem-solving, and statistical reasoning.

The program concluded with the administration of post-tests—the Science and Mathematics Mastery Inventories for Grade 7 Teachers—to measure conceptual growth and pedagogical improvement. In the closing program, representatives from DepEd and CISTEM delivered inspiring messages underscoring their shared mission to elevate STEM education across the country.

Through this training, MSU-IIT continues to advance higher education by capacitating educators in sustained professional learning and engaging in academic collaborations.
