MSU-IIT CED capacitates faculty researchers in Community Needs Assessment

Oct 22 2025

MSU-IIT's College of Education (CED), through the Center for Pedagogical Research (CPR), with the support of the Center for Integrated STEM Education, Inc. (CISTEM), conducted a “Community Needs Assessment Workshop” on October 11, 2025, at the IDS Hinaplanon Campus Conference Room, equipping CED faculty researchers with advanced skills and tools for conducting community needs assessment.

The one-day activity aimed to develop a pool of experts capable of systematically identifying and analyzing educational gaps within communities. Dr. Manuel B. Barquilla, Director of the Center for Pedagogical Research, spearheaded the initiative.

The morning session centered on comprehensive discussions about the theory and practice of conducting community needs assessments. Mr. Melvin Magsayo, Executive Director of CISTEM, started the workshop in a “Knowing Your Community” activity, allowing the participants to identify the resources available within the city. Thereafter, Dr. Sheryl Lyn C. Monterola, Director of the University of the Philippines National Institute for Science and Mathematics Education Development (UP NISMED), led participants through critical conversations about assessment methodologies, introducing artificial intelligence tools that can streamline data analysis processes.

Following theoretical inputs, the afternoon session transitioned to practical application. Dr. Rayannah R. Benasing and Dr. Generie G. San Pablo of CED-DSME guided faculty researchers through the hands-on process of developing the Community Needs Assessment instrument.

Participants applied the principles and methodologies discussed earlier to collaboratively design, refine, and finalize a comprehensive assessment tool. The newly trained faculty experts will now be able to lead future assessment projects, mentor other researchers, and ensure that CED’s research projects remain anchored in documented community needs.

The workshop’s success highlights the value of strategic partnerships in faculty capacity-building. By bringing together expertise from UP NISMED, CISTEM, and CED’s own leadership, the Center for Pedagogical Research created a rich learning environment that elevated faculty research capabilities.
