Food waste at MSU-IIT decreases in 2024

Feb 01 2025

Considering the fact that hunger is still a problem worldwide, Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT) advocates for reducing food waste on campus.

The Office of Student Residences and Food Services (OSRFS) spearheaded this campaign by tracking the food waste for all concessionaires at university canteens. The University Infirmary provided assistance to OSRFS through the use of their unutilized weighing scale. Using the procedure used by the Environmental Engineering students in measuring the food waste generated in 2023, an average decrease of 3.06 kilogram per week was noted in 2024.

In 2023, the university had an average of 56.83 kilograms of food waste per week. For 2024, this reduced to an average of just 53.77 kilograms per week. The university recorded 2,955.16 kilograms of food waste in 2023. This reduced to 2,796.04 kilograms in 2024.

The university is continuing its campaign towards reducing food waste on campus as part of its sustainability initiative.
